Shuga: Love, Sex, Money
available in: (original)
|
Friday 28th October 2011
Written by Julie
Check out Rising Star Juliana Ohayo with her rundown of what to expect from Shuga: Love, Sex, Money…
Love, Sex and Money – three things that are intricately weaved into the fabric of society. Everybody can relate to one, if not all three of them, right?
But these three words are also the basis of the sizzling second season of Shuga – which is going to be bigger and better than the first – believe the hype!
As we follow the lives of the familiar characters that you loved, hated and loved to hate as well as several new characters, you can definitely expect this cutting-edge series to stay with you long after you watch it.
Photo: @Kim_Wild
It’s a story of fun-loving, short-sighted, hard-working, love-making, dream-chasing, heart-breaking and well-meaning youth.
Violet is now all grown up and doing her thing, Skola is living positively, Leo is still the good guy in love, Ayira has moved from Nairobi and Kennedy is… well Kennedy!
New to the show; Angelo is the reformed thug, Rayban is the gay best friend, Miss B’Have is the sexy singer, Femi is the flamboyant lady-whisperer, Dala is the stunning party girl, Kipepeo is the village girl with big dreams and Baby is the young sweetheart. Wow!
Shuga: Love, Sex, Money explores the notions of power and the impact those who have it leave in our lives, reflects on beliefs and actions surrounding love, lust and sex and tells the story of hopes and dreams that either flourish or shatter into a million pieces.
Complicated, much like life, it investigates the choices people make and their undeniable effects on themselves and others.
Launching on February 14th 2012 (mark your calendars and tell your friends!), prepare yourselves for a fascinating series of episodes that promises to keep you on your toes. Trust me, you don’t want to be left out on this one.
What do you think of Juliana’s first post? And What storyline/character are you most looking forward to seeing?

MTV Shuga Rising Star Dorcas Njoki recently met with Sharon Olago aka Vio in Shuga: Love, Sex, Money.
You may remember Violet in the first series of Shuga as the fun loving party girl, but expect a much more mature, responsible Vio in Shuga: Love, Sex, Money.
Check out the interview below to see Sharon Olago talk new story lines, the impact her character has had on her since Shuga aired, what she relates to most in Shuga: Love, Sex, Money and much more…
Photo: @Kim_Wild
Hey Sharon! Let’s jump straight into things: What are your thoughts on Shuga: Love, Sex, Money?
If you loved Shuga, then you’ll fall in love all over again with shuga: Love, Sex, Money. Its definitely bigger and better with new cast, new story lines and angles new themes. My character has matured and I get to accept changes in my life. I also get to be a mentor to someone.
What changed following the first series of Shuga?
I was announced as the first HIV champion for women – It was a great honor. In terms of my character, since Shuga aired it seems that at times people do not know where to draw the line of character and actor. People who judged my character for her behaviour seemed to carry it over to myself, but I now know how to deal with it.
Are there any similarities between you and Vio?
Yes. We both love fun. We are sociable and we both love Nairobi!
Can you give us the inside? What new themes are going to be addressed in Shuga: Love, Sex, Money?
Issues of low risk perception amongst homosexuals and the gay community have been highlighted. Rural-urban aspects have also been factored in contrast to the first series of Shuga which was more urban oriented.
Of the themes Love, Sex and Money, which do you relate to most and why?
I relate to money most. People do funny things for the love of money. In truth, all the other factors are tied to money one way or another. Money vs Sex, Money vs Love.
If you could have a 5 minute conversation with anyone dead, or alive, who would you choose?
Aung San Suu Kyi. She underwent voluntary house arrest to make a cause known. I love her strength and sacrifice.
Last word?
‘Play safe, manage your status’
Thanks Sharon!
There you have it! What do you think of what Sharon had to say? And what are your thoughts on what Sharon had to say about her character Vio in Shuga: Love, Sex, Money?

Check out MTV Shuga Rising Star Kevin Oyugi, with his first blog – an account of the premier of Kenya’s first “Mantalk” show “Mentality” which aims to get men talking about issues like love, sex and money.

A sweepingly red carpet majestically lined the front promenade of Galileo’s Lounge on Waiyaki Way, Westlands on Tuesday evening as if welcoming the @MTVShuga #RisingStars - Kevin Oyugi, Julie Adhiambo, Dorcas Njoki and Esther Murugo. Street Team mentor Phillip Ogola organized passes for our team to attend the exclusive premier of Kenya’s first ‘mantalk’ talkshow, bought to you by pay TV brand, Zuku TV.
The talk show, entitled ‘Mentality’, which now airs every Friday evening on Zuku TV, was produced by local Kenyan media celebrity Eve D’Souza’s company, Moonbeam Productions and includes Ian Mbugua, Edward Kwach and Pastor Simon as its presenters.
The attendees were treated to a sneak preview of the show, amidst a presentation from a Zuku executive about the company’s initiative and vision with not just the talk show but of other ambitious visions the pay television channel has in store.
‘Mentality’ targets the Kenyan males and addresses pertinent issues that are relevant to them. Similarly to Shuga: Love, Sex, Money – the show aims to tackle real issues based around Love, Sex and Money and give such discussions a platform, breaking the notion that men can’t talk about their emotions, habits and choices.
We were introduced to the producer of the show, Eve D’Souza and exchanged contact information – so watch this space because we will be following the progress of this show and exploring the issues that are discussed throughout. In the meantime – check out the promo below:
What do you think of Kevin’s first blog? And what issues would you like to see discussed in “Mentality”?

Young people to write new UNAIDS strategy on youth and HIV
available in: (original)
|
UNAIDS will use crowdsourcing technologies and social media platforms to
engage young people in developing AIDS policy *
*GENEVA**, 25 October 2011*—The Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS
(UNAIDS) is launching CrowdOutAIDS.org, an online collaborative project to
crowdsource its new strategy on youth and HIV—a first in the UN system.
Crowdsourcing is a technique used to rapidly engage large numbers of
interested people to develop strategies, solve problems or propose relevant
and fresh ideas. With around 3000 young people aged 15-24 becoming infected
with HIV daily, leveraging new modes of communication and online
collaboration with young people is essential for an effective response to
HIV.
“We’re asking youth around the world to debate, draft and work with UNAIDS
to implement this new strategy,” said Michel Sidibé, Executive Director of
UNAIDS. “It is absolutely critical that we engage young people—not as
recipients of our messages but as the actors and creators of change.”
CrowdOutAIDS.org is a completely new way for UNAIDS to develop policy on
HIV. It will use crowdsourcing technologies and familiar online tools such
as Facebook, Twitter and Renren to ensure youth engagement and action in the
AIDS response.
CrowdOutAIDS.org follows a four-step model and is open to anyone aged 15-29.
Young people will be able to shape the new strategy from conceptualization
to final drafting via a wiki-platform.
“It is important to involve young people in policy development in order for
our views, expectations and aspirations to be fully represented,” said
Jennifer Ehidiamen, a blogger and journalist from Nigeria, and online
content curator for CrowdOutAIDS.org. “CrowdOutAIDS.org is an innovative way
to build a strong community, interested in sharing solution-based ideas and
actions on AIDS.”
The project will run over a period of two months with the final crowdsourced
strategy being produced in January, 2012. To find out more, visit
www.CrowdOutAIDS.org , and follow @UNAIDS and
#CrowdOutAIDS on Twitter.
It is high time, we proffer solutions ourselves. Make your voice heard.
Thumbs up to UNAIDS for this opportunity

UNAIDS launches: Give AIDS the Red Card initiative at the All-Africa Games in Mozambique
available in: (original)
|
UNAIDS Executive Director Michel Sidibé and Mozambique’s Minister of Youth and Sports H.E. Pedrito Fuleda Caetano launched the UNAIDS initiative Give AIDS the Red Card. The announcement was made on the eve of the 10th All-Africa Games, the continent’s largest multi-sports tournament bringing together more than 5 000 athletes.
“Reducing the numbers of new HIV infections is nowhere more imperative or urgent than in Africa,” said Mr Sidibé. “The All-Africa Games are a great occasion to raise awareness about intensifying efforts to reach UNAIDS’ vision of Zero new HIV infections, Zero discrimination and Zero AIDS-related deaths.”
The launch took place under the patronage of Dr. Aires Aly Bonifácio, Prime Minister of Mozambique. Attending the launch were former Mozambican President Joaquim Alberto Chissano as well as many leading athletes.
The UNAIDS Give AIDS the Red Card campaign aims to raise awareness and mobilize action to strengthen the response to HIV and accelerate progress across Africa. The campaign was introduced at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa with the support of 28 team captains. Captains of six teams at the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Germany also endorsed the initiative.
At the Maputo event, heads of national delegations to the Games, including presidents of National Olympic Committees and Ministers of Sport from 47 participating countries, agreed to sign a pledge to support the Give AIDS the Red Card campaign for Zero new HIV infections, Zero discrimination, and Zero AIDS-related deaths.
By signing the pledge, each delegation is agreeing to set up a national plan of action on the Give AIDS the Red Card campaign in consultation with UNAIDS offices upon return to their respective countries.
The 2012 Africa Cup of Nations hosted by Equatorial Guinea and Gabon will be the next platform for pan-African mobilization of the initiative.
The importance of youth and sporting community participation in the response to AIDS was emphasized by the UNAIDS Executive Director during his meeting with Mozambique’s Minister of Youth and Sports, H.E. Pedrito Fuleda Caetano.
Mr Sidibé asked the Ministry to use the All-Africa Games to promote this initiative across all sports disciplines during the Games and beyond. Mr Sidibé emphasised that “sport events should be viewed as key platforms to link with other social movements to drive the prevention revolution including reducing vulnerability of women and girls, scaling-up HIV testing and counselling, reduction of multiple partnership and accelerating medical male circumcision.”
Sub-Saharan Africa continues to be the region most affected by HIV, with an estimated 22.5 million people living with HIV in the region representing 68% of the global total. However significant progress is being made in the region. In 22 countries, the HIV incidence rate has declined by more than 25% between 2001 and 2009.

Ghanaian AIDS advocate cycles the globe to raise awareness andleadership on HIV....Interesting story...
available in: (original)
|
AIDS advocate Shisu Alhaji Yakubu of Ghana has biked 238 000 kilometres to
raise awareness about HIV. After travelling to New York to participate in
the UN General Assembly High Level Meeting on AIDS that took place from 8-10
June, Mr Yakubu says he will now embark on a bike ride from Vienna to
Washington, DC to attend the next International AIDS Conference to be held
in the United States in 2012.
Mr Yakubu attended the UN High Level Meeting specifically to meet UNAIDS
Executive Director Michel Sidibé. I came here all the way from Africa to
say thank you, he explained. In addition to meeting Mr Sidibé, he cycled to
New York City to demand world leaders participating in the High Level
Meeting to join forces with the voices calling for a stronger AIDS response.
In unity lies strength, so the old adage goes, said Mr Yakubu. I would
therefore earnestly appeal to our leaders and people living in West Africa
to unite against the stigma attached to the disease, he said.
Mr Yakubu developed an interest for voluntary work when he was still in
school, after having seen the difficulties faced by children orphaned by
AIDS. When Planned Parenthood Association of Ghana selected him to represent
his region of Brong-Ahafo in mid-western Ghana at the First National Youth
Conference in Akropong, Mr Yakubu decided to harness his "voluntary spirit"
in this direction.
During the youth conference, he says, he realized the alarming rate at which
HIV was spreading in Ghana and other sub-Saharan countries. "Something must
be done," he decided. "It was about time non-governmental organizations,
community-based organizations, religious organizations and civil society all
came together and joined the response. HIV is not a health issue any more.
It's an issue about you and me."
Please read this interesting story and lets join Yakubu to make a great
change for our world.
